Gettysburg Cycling Weekend - October 4 to 6

A weekend biking event for LVCC members is being planned in Gettysburg for Oct 4, 5, and 6.  Before extensive planning is done, we are looking for interest in the event.  The event has been posted on Meetup with some details and a slot of hotel rooms for club members to reserve.  Sign up on Meetup ( and make your hotel reservation by July 31 to get the club rate.  Once we have commitment from enough people we will modify the routes with rest stops, plan a happy hour, etc.

So far, the planned routes will include:
Friday ride – a 30-mile ride through Gettysburg Battlefield. We will explain how participants can download the NPS app and use Gettysburg National Military Park section to listen to numbered audio explanations at key battle points along the route.
Saturday rides – 2 to 3 options that include routes from 40 to 60 miles
Sunday rides - 2 options that include routes from 30 to 40 miles

Arrangements for a group rate for this weekend have been made with the Comfort Suites Near Gettysburg Battlefield Visitor Center 945 Baltimore Pike, Gettysburg, PA, 17325, US

This hotel in within walking distance of the town and the group rate is $189 per night versus $285 per night and will be available for LVCC members until July 31.

LVCC Night at the Velo - July 19

Youth Bike Summit

By now, most of you are aware of the National Youth Bike Summit that took place June 14th to 16th hosted by Community Bike Works.  Over 200 attendees came from around the country for the event and were very impressed with the cycling community in the valley.  Over 25 LVCC members came out to support the event – leading rides, taking pictures, setting up bikes, storing and moving bikes, etc.  Diana Dunn led the charge by coordinating a lot of the volunteers and activities.  Kim Shaffer, the CBW Executive Director, emphasized to me that without the LVCC, they could not have pulled this off.  Kudos to all who volunteered.

I think all of us that volunteered agreed that it was a lot of fun and were very impressed with the young people who came.  I was particularly impressed by the young man riding next to me down Turner Street who popped a wheelie but continued to talk to me.  Overall, the kids were energetic, polite and caring.  It makes you think the world is in good hands for the future.

Summer Picnic - Help Needed!

Last year we had a great picnic at Upper Saucon Park.  This year we’ve reserved the pavilion for August 17th but need someone to lead the effort.  The location is taken care of and the routes are on our Ride with GPS account.  What’s needed is someone to take charge and coordinate the food, announcements, and other logistics.

This is a great opportunity for someone who has been riding with the club to give back.  We have had good volunteers for many activities, but they tend to be the same people so we’re looking for some new people to step up.  Let me or any of the officers of the club know if you are interested.

LVCC Rides

With the riding season really getting into gear, I thought a few words about club rides would be in order.  Greg Schnabel held a ride leaders meeting a few weeks ago and the club is lucky to have so many willing leaders.  They work to outline routes and set expectations on speed, length and climbs.  In addition, the training in safety and emergency response helps keep our rides controlled and riders safe.  Some rides are no drop and leaders want the group to stay together while others are comfortable with faster riders going ahead.  The preference should be stated in the Meetup description.  Some leaders limit attendance while others will take out a large group.  Some are “spirited” rides while others are strictly social.

Riders - please read the Meetup description and make sure the ride is a good fit for you.  If the ride leader has set the pace, don't go off the front without permission particularly if the ride is billed as a group or social ride.  As Paul Smith has said - be able and willing to ride the pace set by the leader.  If you have questions, put them into the Comment section on Meetup.  The rede leader has put effort into setting up the ride - please help them make the ride successful for all.  Volunteer to help out if you are comfortable doing so.

Let’s work together to make our rides safe and fun for everyone.

Annual Membership Dues to Increase

Inflation has caught up with the LVCC.  All our costs are going up, particularly insurance.  Our subscription fees no longer cover our fixed costs.  At the membership meeting last Wednesday it was unanimously agreed to raise our fees $5 for an individul (to $20) and $10 for a family (to $35).  This will take place as soon as the changes to the system can be made.

The fees for the club have been stable for a very long time and few can remember the last time they increased.  I did survey and talked to other bike clubs in the area and we are definitely on the low end.  We are making this change now and will evaluate it over the next few years to see if any additional adjustment is needed.

I hope everyone is getting out to enjoy the beautiful mild winter days and enjoying the activities that the club provides.  Enjoy your spring ridiing and see you on the road or trail.  Feel free to email me with any questions.
