Youth Bike Summit Volunteers needed for June 15th

Work Shops on Saturday June 15th During the Youth Bike Summit That Need Volunteers

The volunteer requests here are for volunteers to serve as chaperones (not to lead or organize the workshop.)

Note, hereafter, CBW refers to Community Bike Works

With the exception of the last workshop in the list below, all of these volunteer positions have a time requirement of ~ 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm on Saturday June 15th.  Volunteers will report to Muhlenberg College.

CBW Madison St. Tour.  Youth will cycle from Muhlenberg College to the CBW Madison Street location in Allentown (~ 6 miles.)  CBW staff will give the youth a tour of the Madison St site.  After the tour, the group cycles back to Muhlenberg.    Two CBW staff members will lead the bike ride and the tour at Madison Street.  Two volunteers are needed to assist the two CBW staff on the ride to/from Madison St.   Volunteers should bring their own bike.

CBW Keck Park Tour/Iron Pigs Behind the Scenes Tour.   This is actually two separate workshops that will share the same transportation.   A bus & hired driver will drive up to 48 youth from Muhlenberg College to the CBW Keck park location on the East side of Allentown.   Half of the students will stay at the CBW Keck Park location and tour the facility.   The youth will then go on a short bike ride on the D&L.  Three volunteers (as chaperones) needed to help with the D&L ride.   The other half of the youth will cycle from Keck park to Coca-Cola Park for a behind-the-scenes tour of the ball park.  This is a short ride, ~6 miles round trip.  The group will ride back to Keck park after the tour. Two volunteers are needed as chaperones on the ride to Coca-Cola Park.

Bicycling Magazine/Nuture Nature Center.  This is actually two separate workshops that will share the same transportation. A bus & hired driver will drive up to 48 youth from Muhlenberg College to Easton.    Half of the students will be dropped off at Bicycling Magazine for a tour. The second half of the students will go to the Nuture Nature Center for a visit of the Science on a Sphere.  Two volunteers are needed as chaperones for the Bicycling Magazine tour.

Try the Track

Youth will be driven to the Velodrome via bus/hired driver to participate in track riding sessions.  Velodrome staff will run the sessions.  There will be two sessions: 1:00 to 3:00 pm and 3:00 to 5:00 pm.  Three volunteers are needed for each session to take the bus from Muhlenberg with the students, connect the students with the Velodrome staff, and return with the students on the bus to Muhlenberg.  You can volunteer for 1 or both sessions.

Bike Skills Workshop:  CBW youth leader Avery Daniels will be leading a Bike Skills workshop. This will consist of a ride from Muhlenberg to Lehigh Valley Parkway that includes skill development. Riders are needed to assist Avery on this ride Three volunteers are needed to ride with the group from Muhlenberg to the Parkway and return to Muhlenberg. Volunteers should bring their own bike.

Park to Park Ride Throughout the day on Saturday, a short ride of approximately 6 miles will leave about every hour on the hour going from Muhlenberg College to Trexler Park and then the Rose Garden back to Muhlenberg. This will allow youth that just feel a need to stretch their legs and take a break from the classroom workshops.  The route is already planned.   Volunteers are needed in two hour shifts to lead these rides

Making Broad Street Better.   Youth will be transported via bus/hired driver to CAT (Coalition for Appropriate Transportation) in Bethlehem.   CAT staff will host a workshop regarding Bethlehem plans to “Activate Broad Street”  to make it more enjoyable to bike/walk/bus.  CAT staff will also lead a short bike ride in Bethlehem.   Volunteers needed to ride on the bus with the youth and participate in the short rides.  CAT will supply all bikes.

Jordan Park Mountain Bike Ride  Youth will be taken to Jordan Park for a mountain bike ride.  Volunteers are needed to assist with this ride. The ride will be planned and lead by others.

Saturday June 15th Morning Work Shop

 

Bike and Boating.  Youth will be transported from Muhlenberg via bus/hired driver to the Wildlands Conservancy’s Bike & Boat Program.  This workshop will run from ~ 10 am until 3 pm.   Volunteers needed as chaperones for this event.
